First off great forum. Second, quick and long question.
I am a corpsman in the US Coast Guard. My job includes: phlebotomy, diagnosing pts and prescribing meds under the supervision of an MD, shooting x-rays, and preforming minor surgeries. I have been an EMT-B for the past 3 years. I blew off my first two years of college (gpa 1.7  in business admin) mainly because I didn't enjoy it and I was immature and unintrested. Now, 4 years later I'm trying to get to Med school.  So far, in the past year, my gpa for prerequisites for med school is 4.0, from both 2 & 4 year colleges, which has moved me to a 2.5 gpa overall. I still have 24 more hours of prereqs to get, which will put me at 136 sh. of school and a degree. I have also already taken A & P (A) and microbio (A) and I plan to fit biochem in. I get out of the military in May 2006. I have a few great letters of rec. from MDs, PA-Cs, and one from my microbio PHD. I work 65 hours a week and take 12 hours of night and weekend classes a semester, all prereqs. I have about 30 min a day to see my wife so my volenteer work is at a minimum and nearly impossible. As of Dec, I will still have physics II and org chem II (spring semester) to complete . I take the MCAT in Aug (I've been studying with Kaplans QD during lunch for about an hour) Sorry, this question grew a little bit. When should I apply for School, what are my chances at U.S. or Caribbean schools, and what worries should I have? I hope to get into the Aug 2006 class if I apply in Dec. Any info would help. Thanks for your time. pleeease help. I'm stressing (probably due to sleep deprivation). Thanks again. Any comments, good or bad, are welcome.

Hi there,

thanks for the post, which sounds a lot like the most common question asked on these forums, the answer to which is here:

www.caribbeanmedicine.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=147&PN=1

As for U.S. med schools, the GPA and MCAT requirements and stats are available here:

www.studentdoc.com/medfind.html

Try it, it's fun!
